Education Committee on Steep Learning Curve!
By Donna Ziel, Chair

The Education Committee has been learning so much, so fast!  Thanks to the energy and expertise of our committee and Board members, we are delighted to share some important information with our entire membership. As mentioned in a previous article, one of our areas of interest is kindergarten preparation for our little ones. Early literacy plays a critical role in a child’s smooth transition from home or pre-school to kindergarten. What better place to begin to develop a love of reading than the public library? We want you to know about two exciting programs available locally.

Starting this fall, Boulder Creek library will be one of the sites of Family Place Storytime. The library’s website states that during one week per month “there will . . . be stories and songs, [and] . . . the opportunity to play with . . . great, age and developmentally appropriate toys. . . In addition, at least one of our community resource people will be there each month to talk with parents about their questions and concerns [such as] . . . speech, nutrition, physical development, and reading.” If you are the parent of a young child or know someone  who is, by all means pass along this information. For further information, or to register for the program, call Jeanne O’Grady, Youth Services Outreach Librarian at 420-5652. Check out the website.

We also learned about Read to Me kits, the most fantastic resources for encouraging early literacy are now available to anyone with a Santa Cruz Public Libraries card! Read to Me kits come in heavy-duty blue canvas bags. In each bag you’ll find books, puppets, felt stories, and music CDs or cassettes. The content of each bag is focused on a particular theme and there are over 100 themed kits available! Some include bilingual material in English and Spanish. Read to Me kits may be requested from the online catalog to be delivered to any of the public libraries (including Felton and Boulder Creek) and are checked out for four weeks (they’re not renewable). To request a kit, type in “read to me kit” in the search box of the Library Catalog, select the kit you want, and indicate to which branch it should be sent for pickup. It will be there in a few days and you may begin enjoying the thoughtfully developed collection of materials with your young child (or grandchild!). For further information, call 420-5655 and check out the website.

Many other interesting and fun activities are sponsored by the Santa Cruz Public Libraries; from story and lap times, to book clubs (for children and adults) and chess instruction for children. Go to the Friends of the Library’s website to view the calendar of events for the month (or pick up a hard copy of the calendar at any branch).
