Fall 2008

Join the Valley Women’s Board Members at the
Fall Meet and Greet
Sunday, September 28 at Highlands Park

By Nancy Gerdt

One and all are invited to the VWC Fall “Meet and Greet” for community conversations, food, music and friends. We will gather from 2-4 in the afternoon at Highlands Park at the redwood deck near the beautiful new lower playground.
This informal event will include VWC committee information, children’s activities, live music, snacks and drinks. If you are looking for a way to get more involved in the community or if you just want to know a little more about what the VWC is up to, drop by. We’d love to have your input on community issues and are anxious to meet you and your friends.

If you have a friend or friends who have been thinking about joining the VWC, this event is a great introduction to the community work VWC is involved with. Fall is a lovely time in the San Lorenzo Valley to spend a Sunday afternoon with old and new friends.

All ages are welcome! For further information, please contact Vince Waskell (335-4249).

VWC Announces 30th Anniversary in BC July 4th Parade

Parade
A passel of VWC members gathered wearing red, white and blue, put on crowns or top hats, and marched proudly in the Boulder Creek Annual 4th of July Parade – carrying signs announcing 30th years of community service, and our commitment to the SLV. Invitations to join the VWC were passed out as we marched. The group was given an award for Spirit!

VWC Candidates’ Forums Bring Candidates and Issues to Voters
Well over 80 people attended the VWC’s Candidates’ and Issues Forum before the June election, allowing voters to listen to and question those running for local and State office, and to hear the ramifications of local ballot measures. Candidates and Issues Forums have been an important public service provided by the VWC for over 25 yers. Recent forums have been coordinated by VWC Board Member, Sherry Skold, and are held a few weeks before the election so that they may be filmed and put on Community Television too.

Surprisingly enough, there will be no election forum for the November election because both the SLV Water District and the SLV School District had no challengers and only the incumbents are running.  Therefore there is no election and only appointments made.  Both Assembly Candidates were at the June forum.  The VWC will publicize its stands on the State Propositions and County Measures after the September Board meeting.

VWC Board Performs Quarterly Internal Audit
County Requires Annual Financial Reports

The VWC Board takes it fiduciary responsibilities very seriously. As a 501-c-3 (non-profit) organization, we are held to strict standards of responsible financial management. Since the recycling centers’ budget is so large (about $1,000,000/year is spent running the three centers), it is doubly important that the Club’s finances be strictly managed and monitored.

As a part of the monitoring process, members of the Board take turns performing a quarterly internal audit of the recycling centers’ expenditures and income, as well as that of the VWC and its committees. The Director of Recycling provides a monthly written report, which includes all aspects of the Centers’ operations, and produces a quarterly financial report for the Board to review as well. Also, the County demands detailed financial reports each year, which are carefully produced by VWC Treasurer, Sheila DeLany and Recycling Director, Nancy Macy, with the able assistance of Shaelagh Devlin, a professional bookeeper. The reports are then reviewed, amendments made as needed, and approved by the VWC Board before being submitted to the County Controller’s office.

Of course there are budgets for each committee, for the Club and for the recycling centers, which are produced each year and reported on each quarter.

If this part of the VWC’s activities interests you, you might consider running for the Board and taking a role in this vital part of our operations!

Time to Consider Joining the VWC Board
Board elections will be here in no time, and it is important that you consider serving on the Board. There is an election, where about half of the Board members come up for re-election and where new members have the opportunity to run as well.

The Board meets monthly and each Board member is active in the VWC committees, programs and activities where her/his interests lie. Contact Nancy Gerdt (335-3130) if you want more information on the process. You must have been a VWC member for a year before taking office as a Board member.

DaffodilsAnnual Bulb Sale Fundraiser

Buy Beautiful Bulbs for Your Home or Great Gifts!

By Beth Benjamin

Bulb experts in the San Lorenzo Valley have chosen some more, great narcissus for you! They will grow and bloom readily in your yards or on your decks. We were especially thinking of drought resistance and fragrance when we selected a mix of 8 different gopher and deer-proof varieties of daffodils, packed in bags of 50. Plant in the mellow days of fall after the first rains moisten the soil for effortless beauty in your garden, landscape and in your flower vases next Spring. At our house, it’s a day-after-Thanksgiving tradition to plant bulbs, with the entire family helping. Dig 10 holes – set 5 bulbs in each hole! Work over, rains come, spring flowers guaranteed!

We are also selling gift kits of velvet red and angel white amaryllis, and sweet scented Paperwhite Narcissus that will arrive at the end of November so they’ll be in great shape for holiday giving.

Find the order form inside the mailed Newsletter, or click here for a PDF of the order blank. Deadline for orders is Sept. 30. Daffodil collections will arrive in Boulder Creek in mid October; Paperwhites and amaryllis arrive in late November so they won’t sprout too soon, and we’ll contact you for pick up dates and locations.
Support the VWC and bring gorgeous bloom to your home and neighborhood, and into the lives of your family and friends.

Call Linda Moore at 338-6201 or email Linda for additional information.

Help Wanted!

Email Tree/Data Base Volunteer Needed
Shirlee Byrd (and her husband, David, before her) has been the VWC membership data guru for many years. She is hoping that within the next few weeks, another VWC member will take on the task of maintaining the membership data base (which includes sending welcome letters to new members and updating the list as renewals and new members come in, or changes need to be made), providing labels for mailings, and sending out messages to the VWC email list.

Please consider taking on this vital piece of VWC operations. It’s a great way to support the VWC and you can do it from home! Contact Shirley at 457-0726 or email information!

Newsletter Editor Needed
The Newsletter needs a new Editor, since Nancy Macy is “retiring” from the job she has performed for thirty years. It’s fun and fascinating, and another significant way to support the VWC and, again, you can do it from home. Call Nancy (338-6578 or email) for information!

I challenge each of you to find one friend to join the VWC. Together we can continue the work of building a brighter future for the San Lorenzo Valley and our community.
